Eli Harvey did several sculptures of Lions in the early 1900s. He won the commission for the Lion House in the Bronx Zoo and in 1901 his large stone Lions were erected there..The Lion House was finished in 1903, its pediment adorned by a Lion and Lioness facing each other.

This bronze shows a young male Lion, his mane not fully grown in, with his paw on a dead antelope. An interesting model as most hunting in a lion pride is done by the lionesses but the young males are usually on their own until they have grown strong enough to fight for their own lionesses and thus must hunt their food.
