The Panther of Tunis is one of Barye's classic big cat sculptures. This model and the companion piece, the Panther of India, were cast in the 19th century by the Barbedienne foundry and those casts are well detailed with fine patinas. Both of these models have unfortunately been copied over the years in many mediums such as plaster, resin, and lead, but the original 19th century Barbedienne casts are of superb quality.

The Panther of Tunis was cast in 2 sizes, this being the larger size. It is marked with the Barbedienne foundry mark written out F.BARBEDIENNE Fondeur on the side of the base. The bronze has good detail and a rich dark green with black as is typical of this foundry. It is a fine model and one of Barye's best known subjects.
