John Skeaping was a fine English sculptor who is best known for his many equestrian bronzes. He did models in the 1970s of horses and their riders, and of famous race horses of the day, including Mill Reef, Secretariat, Hyperion, Brigadier Gerard, and others.

This superb bronze shows a Thoroughbred Race Horse in full stride with Jockey Up, it is titled "First Time Out". The bronze was cast by Meredian Bronze of London, it is signed on the base and is number 4 of only 10 casts. Skeaping did his famous life sized sculpture of Secretariat in 1974, and this bronze is quite similar in pose to that famous monument.
