While Charles Humphriss is best known for his sculptures of American Indians, he was also a talented animal sculptor. He created several small models of wild animals such as the Tiger with Prey, and domestic animals like this small bronze of a Cat Playing with a Ball.

This bronze is well modeled and shows a Cat crouched down with her paw out to tap a Ball of yarn. The playful feline is intent on her game and we have all seen our pets play with a ball in such a fashion. A charming small bronze by a famous American sculptor, the Cat would be enjoyed by any cat lover or collector of American sculpture.

The bronze has a warm brown patina, this cast is well detailed and could be a unique piece since it is marked “No. 1.” on the base. It is also signed by Humphriss with “Copyright” and dates from the early 1900s. It was cast by the famous Roman Bronze Works foundry with their initials “R.B.W.” on the base as well.
