Jules Moigniez was one of the foremost of the Animalier sculptors and his work is always realistic and done with extreme detail. Many of his bronzes are of domestic animals but he created some fine sculptures of wild animals too.

This miniature bronze of two Rabbits is very similar to his almost life size pair of Hares or Rabbits titled Chasse Ouverte (Hunting Season Open) and Chasse Fermee (Hunting Season Closed) which show male and female Rabbits with their young one.

The bronze shows one Rabbit alert and looking around for danger while the other Rabbit is crouched down beginning to eat a carrot she has found. Perhaps the Rabbits are raiding a farmer's vegetable garden and eating his crops.

A rare model with crisp details, it has a warm medium bronze patina that helps show the sharp textures and features on the Rabbits. One of Moigniez's finest compositions, full of life and character in the story it tells of two Rabbits foraging for their dinner.
