Sculptor - Alfred Barye
Title - Elephant
Sand Cast Bronze Circa 1860 4" height by 5" length (10.1 cm by 12.7 cm)
Like his father Antoine Louis Barye, Alfred Barye did several sculptures of Elephants. These animals were rare in the 19th century and were very popular when they were exhibited in the Paris zoo. This fine small model shows an Asian Elephant standing with some cactus plants at his feet.
The bronze is well detailed and has a rich dark greenish brown patina, and is signed on the base. The elephant is standing quietly at rest. A fine subject that does not often come up for sale, it is one of Alfred Barye's best works and shows the influence of his father.
