Title - Spaniel Ch Rowcliffe Gallant
Lost Wax Cast Bronze
8 1/8" height by 7 1/2" length
(20.6 cm by 19 cm)
This fine bronze is a portrait of Field Trial Champion Rowcliffe Gallant, who was a Cocker Spaniel dog from the famous Rowcliffe Kennels owned by Ella Moffit. Rowcliffe Gallant was whelped in 1928 and his sire was My Own Sheik and his dam was Ch Rowcliffe Gloriana.
Ella Borland Moffit (1889-1945) bred and exhibited her cockers under the Rowcliffe prefix. She produced fine conformation dogs but her primary interest was in the Cocker Spaniel as a multipurpose working dog. Ella was one of the very first women who did Field work with her spaniels and she formed the Hunting Cocker Spaniel Club which was later changed to Cocker Spaniel Field Trial Club.
While she produced quality conformation, obedience and field cockers, Ella Moffit made her largest impact through her writings. She wrote the book "The Cocker Spaniel: Companion, Shooting Dog and Show Dog", in 1935 which was the most complete book ever written on the breed and it is still in print today.
The bronze we offer was commissioned by Ella Moffit of one of her famous dogs, Field Trial Champion Rowcliffe Gallant, it was sculpted by H. Lang in 1930 and cast by the Gorham Foundry. The bronze is signed and titled on the base, it is a superb likeness of this Champion Cocker Spaniel. It is the only one cast, so it is a unique piece.
