Sculptor - Rosa Bonheur
Title - Sleeping Bull
Sand Cast Bronze Circa 1850 5 1/2" height by 11 1/2" length (14 cm by 29.2 cm)
Rosa Bonheur's sculpture of a Sleeping Bull is one of her best models. The large Bull is lying down and his eyes are closed in contentment. She has captured the restful character of the Bull perfectly. It is a shame she did not continue with sculpture because her few works are very sensitive portraits of the farm yard animals she knew best. Rosa Bonheur only created a very few sculptures and then turned to painting and drawing. The Sleeping Bull is a fine cast with a rich dark brown black patina, it is a fine sand cast bronze from the mid 19th century. This large bronze would fit into any collection of Animalier bronzes and makes a nice companion to her brother Isadore's work.
