Sculptor - Pierre Jules Mene
Title - Horse Miniature Stallion
Sand Cast Bronze Atelier Pierre Jules Mene Circa 1870 2" height by 3 1/2" length (5cm by 9cm)
Mene was well known for his horse bronzes and those are probably his best works. He also sculpted miniature versions of his larger sculptures. Those miniatures are rare today because many of these small bronzes were later "given" to scrap metal drives during the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War as bronze was considered a strategic metal and was used in the making of artillery shell casings. This mass destruction of these small sculptures during these two European wars makes them very scarce today.
