Barye did several models of Pheasants in his career and they were quite popular. Hunting was a well known sport and sculptures of game birds were desirable for one's home in the mid 1800s. Pheasants and other game birds were often created as pairs for dining room decoration.

The Walking Pheasant was cast by the famous Barbedienne foundry in Paris, who cast many of Barye's bronze during his lifetime and after his death. It has a warm golden brown and gold patina and it is mounted on the original green veined marble base. A fine example of Barye's work and a handsome model. This model is illustrated in Payne's book Animals in Bronze on page 89.
