When Nancy Russell died in 1941 her estate which comprised Trail's End, the Russell's home in Pasadena California and many original bronze sculptures done by her late husband were sold to Homer Britzman. Mr. Britzman moved into the Russell home and proceeded to contract with Guido Nelli, the Los Angles founder who cast all of Russell's later bronzes, to produce an edition of bronzes made from Russell's original models. The edition was sold only by subscription to the entire edition. Our cast of Alert (cast number 4) was sold by Homer Britzman to W. Alton Jones of New York and has been in Mr. Jone's personal collection until it was acquired by us. This is the first time Cast number 4 of Charles Russell's Alert has been offered publicly since it was cast in 1941. Mr. Britzman had the Nelli Art Bronze foundry cast only 9 bronzes of Charles Russell's original model of Alert.
The Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum in Oklahoma City has cast number 2 is their permanent collection. Cast number 7 is in the permanent collection of the R.W. Norton Museum in Shreveport, Louisiana. Cast number 3 was in the personal collection of James Cagney. Another cast of Alert is in the permanent collection of the Buffalo Bill Historic Center museum in Cody Wyoming. The whereabouts of the remaining 4 casts is unknown at this time.
More information about the Homer Britzman casts of Charles Russell's bronzes can be found in the book Charles M. Russell Sculptor by Rick Stewart
