Sculptor - Charles M. Russell
Title - The Scalp Dancer
Lost Wax Cast Bronze Roman Bronze Works 5 1/2" height by 7 3/4" length (14 cm by 19.6 cm)
The Scalp Dancer was first modeled by Charles Russell in 1914. It was first cast in bronze by the Zoppo foundry in 1916 and it is thought that Zoppo produced a total of only 6 casts. This sculpture was first titled Dancing Indian but on May 8, 1925 it was copyrighted under the title The Scalp Dancer. Roman Bronze Works is thought to have made an additional 3 casts of this model after Charles Russell's death in 1926 for Mrs. Russell and these were listed in the inventory of her estate in 1941. The three Roman Bronze Works casts of Scalp Dancer were sold after Mrs. Russell's death and Hormer Britzman acquired two of them. The estate of Mr. Britzman had three (3) casts of The Scalp Dancer produced by the Roman Bronze Works from Russell's original mold and this bronze is one of that group of six done by Roman Bronze Works
There were only 12 bronzes of this sculpture cast from the original master model and molds created by Charles Russell. Six (6) were cast in Charlie's lifetime, three (3) in Nancy Russell's lifetime, and three (3) cast after Nancy Russell's death. Of the 12 casts made from the artist's original molds nine (9) are in permanent museum collections in the U.S. and will never be offered for sale. These leaves only three (3) casts of The Scalp Dancer in private hands at this time, this being one of them.
More information about the 6 Roman Bronze Works casts of this bronze can be found in the book Charles M. Russell by Rick Stewart
A letter of provenance accompanies this sculpture.
