This large powerful bronze of a Bull challenging by the blind artist Louis Vidal is amazing in its presentation considering the obstacles which had to be overcome by an artist without sight in the mid 19th century It is superbly detailed and is finished in a wonderful multicolored brown and black patina with green highlights very similar to those used by Antoine Louis Barye at this time.  It is signed Vidal aveugle (Vidal the blind).

This cast of Taureau was more than likely poured by Alfred Barye in his fathers foundry as the workmanship is exemplary and the bronze is amazingly light and thin showing that the individual doing the cast work was a master in his own right. The work of Louis Vidal is seldom encountered as he produced very few examples of his bronzes.
