Sculptor - Pierre Jules Mene

Title - Brebis Allaitant son Agneau

Sand Cast Bronze
Atelier Pierre Jules Mene
 Circa 1840

6" height by 9 3/4" length
(15.3 cm by 24.7 cm)

This finely detailed sculpture of a Ewe with a Lamb suckling shows the attention to minute detail that Mene demanded of the workers in his foundry.  The crispness of the ewe's wool is matched in detail by the collar and bell around the sheep's neck which shows a stitched edge to it. This is an early example of this rare model with the flat sided base.  It bears the initial V of the chaser who finished the bronze under the base as well as the ink numbers 4-51 which is probably the date it was finished and the catalogue number of 58.  An example of this model in this same size is on display at the Museum in Nimes, France.

This bronze is illustrated in the following books:

Animals in Bronze by Christopher Payne, pg. 372
Bronzes of the 19th Century by Pierre Kjellberg, pg. 486.
